Michael O'Brien
Head Varsity Coach
Coach O'Brien completed his eleventh year leading the Aztec Softball Nation. Coach OB has led the Aztecs to an overall 191-60 record over the past eleven years for an astonishing .761 winning percentage including a Division 3 STATE TITLE in 2013. The record also includes 3 Consecutive Central Mass Titles which ties Uxbridge (1986-1988) for the most consecutive Central Mass Titles in Division 3 in a row. The Aztecs also accomplished what hasn't been done for over 45 years in baseball/softball in Massachusetts and that is as a Vocational High School win a State Championship. As of 2017, Assabet is the only Vocational team to do so in softball! With support from the Aztec community, athletic director, administration, parents, players and coaches it was a great experience for all. The team has always been built on higher standards and the softball tradition continues on stronger than ever, over the past three years, the combined G.P.A. of the team has been above 3.6 winning merit for Academic Excellence in 2016 and 2017. Coach O'Brien understands academic success leads to athletic success. Coach O'Brien excelled at St. Peter Marian High School as a Super Telegram and Gazette All Star in baseball in 1992. He then received a scholarship to the U. of New Haven and captained the team his last two years, including one that played in the College World Series in 1995. After college, Coach O'Brien played professional baseball https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=obrien002mic for an independent league team in New Hampshire. Coach O'Brien was inducted into the St. Peter Marian Hall of Fame in fall of 2014. He's received his Bachelor's degree from U. of New Haven and his Master's degree in Special Education from Cambridge College. Coach O'Brien is a professional educator in Supported Mathematics, Supported English and Science Teacher in full inclusion setting as well as tutor, Reading/Math Academy teacher and previously coached at Worcester State University from 1998-2003 in which the team qualified for playoffs in each of those years and winning a birth to the NCAA for the first time in over 30 years.
Bruce Long
Assistant Varsity Coach
Varsity Assistant Coach: Bruce Long
Coach Long enters his 4th year assisting the Aztecs on the varsity level. Coach Long has two daughters who played for Wachusett and was instrumental in their development leading them to Mid Wach league all-stars along the way. Coach Long is the lead teacher for the Electrical Wiring vocational shop at Assabet Valley. Coach will be working on charting pitches, 3rd Base Coach, working with infielders and bringing a positive, tough mentality to the team. We are honored to have his presence on the sidelines and guiding runners along the bay paths.
Al Maino
Junior Varsity Coach
Junior Varsity Head Coach: Al Maino
Coach Maino enters his 3rd year leading the junior varsity softball team after compiling 8 wins in his 2nd season. Coach Maino is also the junior varsity basketball coach for the Aztecs as well. Coach is known for his commitment to success and producing quality players after intense instruction at the JV level, preparing the players for varsity with little transition deficits when players get called up from the minors. Coach Maino is also a part of the electrical wiring shop at Assabet Valley. Coach Maino has worked previously in the West Boylston athletic association for over ten years prior to committing to the Aztec Athletic Association.

Coach O'Brien, known as "Pops" throughout the year gave an inspirational edge to the team and focused on outfielders and bringing a positive attitude to the team. Pops duties include coaching 1st base, outfield coach and team mentor. Coach O'Brien recently retired and joined the coaching staff after many years of helping out with legion, high school baseball and mainly as a role model for younger players. He retired from WPI where he worked as a police officer and gave over 25 years to different law enforcement agencies through his life career.
